Best Car Interior Cleaner: 12 Products Tested on Every Surface

The car interior cleaners that work on leather, cloth seats, carpet, dashboards and screens, tested in two daily-driven cars, with what Reddit detailers use and what to avoid.

Updated October 23, 2026

Key Takeaways

  • P&S Xpress is the best all-around car interior cleaner: safe on plastic, vinyl, leather and fabric, with a matte finish and no residue.
  • Use a leather cleaner like Lexol on leather seats; conditioner only helps older or uncoated leather.
  • Cloth seats and carpet need a fabric foam or spot remover, and an enzyme cleaner for food, milk and pet stains.
  • Clean screens with a barely damp microfiber, never alcohol, ammonia or an all-purpose cleaner.
  • Spray the brush or towel, not the surface, and keep water away from headliners.

A car interior has more different materials in it than most rooms in a house: textured plastic, soft-touch vinyl, coated leather, cloth, carpet, rubber, glass and a touchscreen with an anti-glare coating, all within arm’s reach of each other. One product can handle most of them. None can handle all of them well.

I clean two cars on a regular schedule. My daily driver has black leather seats, a soft-touch dash and a large center screen. The second is a family SUV with gray cloth seats and carpet that sees muddy shoes, coffee, crayons and a dog. Over the last few months I ran the cleaners below through both: weekly wipe-downs, a full interior detail on each car and a long list of spills I would rather not have had to test on. This is what stayed in my kit.

Interior cleaner, detailer or protectant?

The labels overlap, and that is where most of the confusion comes from. Here is how I sort them:

  • Interior cleaner. Removes dirt, body oil and grime. It should leave the surface looking like it did from the factory, with no shine. P&S Xpress is in this group.
  • All-purpose cleaner (APC). A stronger concentrate you dilute with water. It cuts heavier grime on mats, door pockets and carpet. Too strong a mix can dry out leather or leave white haze on plastic, so the ratio matters.
  • Quick interior detailer. A light cleaner with a little UV protection, made for weekly dusting and fingerprints. Meguiar’s and Adam’s detailers are here.
  • Protectant or dressing. Adds UV blockers and sometimes shine. It does not clean much. Put it on after cleaning, not instead of cleaning.
  • Specialty cleaners. Fabric foam, enzyme stain removers, leather cleaner and glass cleaner. Each does one job better than any all-in-one.

The 12 best car interior cleaners

P&S Xpress Interior Cleaner spray bottle

1. P&S Xpress Interior Cleaner

Best overall car interior cleaner

Xpress is the cleaner I reach for first on every surface except glass. It took a summer’s worth of sunscreen and hand grime off my leather steering wheel and door pulls in one pass with a brush, and the leather came back to its original matte look instead of a slick sheen. On the cloth seats it lifted a light coffee drip without leaving a ring. It dries to nothing, so there is no greasy film on the dash and no glare on the windshield. The scent is light and clean and gone within an hour. Professional detailers buy it by the gallon, and it is the most-recommended interior cleaner on Reddit’s detailing forums by a wide margin.

  • Liked: safe on leather, plastic, vinyl and fabric; true matte finish; no residue.
  • Didn’t like: harder to find in stores than Meguiar’s or Chemical Guys; heavy grime needs a brush, not just a towel.

Meguiar's Ultimate Interior Detailer spray bottle

2. Meguiar’s Ultimate Interior Detailer

Best for quick wipe-downs and screens

This is the bottle that lives in my car. It is a lighter cleaner than Xpress, made for dust, fingerprints and the film that builds up on a dash between real cleanings. It leaves a satin finish with some UV protection, and nothing about it feels slick or greasy. Meguiar’s lists it as safe on navigation screens, and I use it on mine by misting a microfiber cloth, never the screen itself. It is the easiest product here for someone who wants to spend five minutes, not an afternoon.

  • Liked: satin finish, safe on screens and gauges, sold almost everywhere.
  • Didn’t like: not strong enough for sticky spills or dirty carpet.

Chemical Guys Total Interior Cleaner and Protectant spray bottle

3. Chemical Guys Total Interior Cleaner & Protectant

Best one-step cleaner you can buy anywhere

Total Interior is the most-reviewed car interior cleaner on Amazon, and it earns a place here for being easy. One spray cleans and leaves a light protectant layer on plastic, vinyl and leather. On the SUV’s dash it cleaned well and left a slightly richer, darker look than Xpress, but not a shiny one. Detailing forums tend to be harder on Chemical Guys than buyers are. I agree with them that Xpress cleans better, and with buyers that this is a good product for most people.

  • Liked: one step, pleasant scent, in stock at most parts stores.
  • Didn’t like: leaves a faint layer, so I keep it off the steering wheel and pedals.

Adam's Polishes Interior Detailer spray bottle

4. Adam’s Interior Detailer

Best-smelling interior detailer

Adam’s makes the interior spray that people buy partly for the smell, and I understand the appeal. It cleans light dust and fingerprints about as well as the Meguiar’s, leaves a clean matte finish and is safe on screens, and the car smells good for a day or two afterward without the heavy perfume of a hanging air freshener. Use it for weekly upkeep, not for a dirty interior.

  • Liked: scent, matte finish, safe on touch surfaces.
  • Didn’t like: costs more per ounce than Meguiar’s for similar cleaning.

Koch Chemie Green Star universal cleaner bottle

5. Koch Chemie Green Star

Best value concentrate

Green Star is a strong German all-purpose cleaner sold as a concentrate. Mixed at about 1:30 in a spray bottle, it is my go-to for the jobs that are too dirty for an interior cleaner: rubber floor mats, door pockets, kick panels, seat tracks and the plastic cargo area of the SUV. A single liter makes many bottles of working solution. It is alkaline, so it is not something to spray on leather, and I wipe every surface with a damp towel afterward so no residue dries on the plastic.

  • Liked: cuts heavy grime, very cheap per bottle mixed, also works on wheels and engine bays.
  • Didn’t like: keep it off leather and screens; needs a wipe with a damp towel.

Chemical Guys Foaming Citrus Fabric Clean spray bottle

6. Chemical Guys Foaming Citrus Fabric Clean

Best for cloth seats

Cloth seats get dull before they get stained: body oil and dust darken the bolsters and the center of the seat back. This foam fixed that on the SUV in one round. I sprayed one section at a time, scrubbed with a stiff upholstery brush, then blotted with a dry microfiber, and the gray came back a shade lighter and even. It does not soak the cushion, which matters because a wet seat foam takes a day to dry and can smell musty. It also works on carpet and floor mats.

  • Liked: lifts the overall grime from cloth seats, fast to dry, mild citrus smell.
  • Didn’t like: older or set-in spots need a dedicated spot remover or an enzyme.

Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover bottle

7. Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover

Best for carpet spots and headliners

Folex is sold for household carpet, and detailers adopted it years ago because it works and does not need rinsing. It removed dried soda and a muddy footprint from the SUV’s carpet with nothing more than a spray, a minute of waiting and a scrub with a brush. It is also what I use on headliners, sprayed lightly on a soft brush instead of the fabric. It is water based and odor free, and it has never left a ring on anything I have used it on.

  • Liked: no rinsing, no smell, gentle enough for headliners.
  • Didn’t like: large bottle only; not made for organic stains like milk or pet accidents.

P&S Terminator enzyme spot and stain remover bottle

8. P&S Terminator Enzyme Spot & Stain Remover

Best for food, milk and pet stains

Protein stains are different. Milk, vomit, blood, food and pet accidents leave residue that a normal cleaner spreads around and that comes back as a smell on the first warm day. An enzyme breaks that residue down. I used Terminator on a sippy-cup leak that had soaked into the SUV’s rear seat, let it dwell for ten minutes, agitated it, then extracted with a wet vacuum. The stain went and so did the sour smell. If you have kids or a dog in the car, keep a bottle of this.

  • Liked: removes the source of the smell, not just the stain.
  • Didn’t like: needs dwell time; works best with an extractor or wet vac to pull the liquid back out.

Lexol All Leather Cleaner bottle

9. Lexol All Leather Cleaner

Best car leather cleaner

Most car leather made in the last 20 years has a pigmented, coated finish, and what it needs is a gentle, pH-balanced cleaner that removes body oil without stripping that coating. Lexol does exactly that and nothing else: no wax, no silicone, no shine. On my black leather seats it took the gray film off the driver’s bolster and left the leather matte. I spray it on a soft brush, work small sections and wipe with a damp microfiber. It is cheap, it has been around for decades and it does not leave anything that makes the seats slippery.

  • Liked: gentle, residue free, keeps the factory matte look.
  • Didn’t like: slow on heavy dye transfer from jeans; that needs repeated passes.

Leather Honey leather conditioner bottle

10. Leather Honey Leather Conditioner

Best for dry or older leather

Conditioner is the most oversold product in car care. Coated modern leather does not absorb much of anything, so on a newer car a conditioner mostly sits on top. Where it helps is older, semi-aniline or uncoated leather that has started to feel stiff or look dry. On an older leather seat I treated, Leather Honey soaked in overnight and the leather felt softer the next day. Apply a thin coat, let it sit and buff off what is left. It is for real leather only, not vinyl or faux leather.

  • Liked: penetrates older leather, one bottle lasts years, no scent.
  • Didn’t like: thick, so it is easy to overapply; little benefit on new coated leather.

303 Aerospace Protectant spray bottle

11. 303 Aerospace Protectant

Best UV protectant without shine

303 is what I put on the dashboard and door tops after cleaning, a few times a year, because those are the surfaces that fade and crack in the sun. It dries to a matte finish and repels dust for a few weeks. The trick is to buff it dry with a second clean towel. Skip that step and it streaks and feels slightly tacky, which is where nearly every complaint about it comes from. It is also good on rubber door seals and the plastic trim outside.

  • Liked: strong UV protection, matte finish, dust stays off longer.
  • Didn’t like: streaks if you don’t buff it off; keep it off pedals, the steering wheel and glass.

Stoner Invisible Glass auto glass cleaner spray

12. Stoner Invisible Glass

Best for the inside of the windshield

The haze on the inside of a windshield comes from plastics off-gassing and from people breathing, and it is greasy. Invisible Glass cuts it without streaking, which is more than I can say for household glass cleaner. It contains no ammonia, so it is safe on tinted windows. For the windshield, I spray the towel, wipe across, then flip to a dry side and wipe up and down so any streak shows its direction and I know which side it is on.

  • Liked: streak free, tint safe, cuts interior haze.
  • Didn’t like: aerosol overspray lands on the dash if you spray the glass directly.

Two tools that make any cleaner work better

A cleaner does half the job. The other half is getting it into the grain and then back out. A set of soft detailing brushes, like the Chemical Guys interior brush set, does more for a dirty dash than any change of product. For cloth seats and carpet, a small spot extractor like the Bissell Little Green pulls the dirty water out instead of leaving it to dry in the foam. A shop vac with a narrow nozzle works almost as well if you already own one.

Which cleaner for which surface

Surface Use Avoid
Hard and textured plastic Interior cleaner (Xpress), diluted APC for heavy grime, 303 after Magic erasers, undiluted degreaser
Soft-touch dash and vinyl Interior cleaner or quick detailer, 303 for UV Shiny silicone dressings (windshield glare)
Touchscreen and gauge cluster Quick detailer or distilled water, sprayed on a microfiber Alcohol, ammonia glass cleaner, APC, paper towels
Coated leather (most cars) Leather cleaner (Lexol) or Xpress APC, alcohol, magic erasers, all-purpose wipes
Older or uncoated leather Leather cleaner, then conditioner (Leather Honey) Heavy conditioner on perforated seats
Cloth seats Fabric foam, Xpress, enzyme for organic stains Soaking the seat, household carpet shampoo machines left wet
Carpet and fabric mats Folex, fabric foam, diluted APC, extractor Bleach, colored cleaners on light carpet
Headliner Folex or Xpress, sprayed on a soft brush, light pressure Spraying the fabric directly, steam, scrubbing
Rubber mats Diluted APC, rinse Dressings (slippery under pedals)
Glass Invisible Glass Interior dressings near the windshield
Hand wiping a car infotainment touchscreen with a folded microfiber cloth
Screens: lightly dampen a clean microfiber and wipe. Never spray the screen itself.

How to clean a car interior

This is the order I follow on a full interior clean. It takes about two hours on the SUV and an hour on the smaller car.

  1. Empty the car and pull the mats. Shake out or vacuum fabric mats; scrub rubber mats with diluted APC and rinse them so they dry while you work.
  2. Vacuum everything, top to bottom. Seats, seams, under the seats, then the carpet. Use a brush attachment on vents and the dash. Dry dirt left behind turns to mud the moment a cleaner touches it.
  3. Clean the hard surfaces. Spray interior cleaner on a soft brush or a microfiber towel, not on the dash. Agitate textured areas, buttons and seams, then wipe with a clean towel. Work from the headliner edges and dash down to the door pockets and kick panels.
  4. Clean the screens last on the dash. Use a fresh microfiber, barely damp with a quick detailer or distilled water.
  5. Clean the seats. Leather: leather cleaner on a soft brush, small sections, wipe with a damp towel, then a dry one. Cloth: fabric foam or an enzyme on stains, brush, then blot or extract.
  6. Treat the carpet. Spot remover on stains, a stiff brush, then extract or blot. Leave the doors open or run the heat with the windows cracked until it is dry.
  7. Do the glass. Inside of the windshield, side windows, mirrors. Glass goes after everything else, because cleaning the dash and seats throws overspray onto it.
  8. Protect. 303 on the dash and door tops, buffed dry. Leather conditioner only if the leather needs it.

Between full cleans, a quick detailer on a towel every week or two keeps dust and fingerprints from building up, and it is far less work than a deep clean twice a year.

How to clean car seats

Seats get their own steps because they hold the most dirt. For cloth, vacuum hard with a brush attachment first, then spray a fabric cleaner on one panel at a time, scrub in two directions with an upholstery brush and blot with a dry towel. On stains, start with the mildest product: Xpress or the fabric foam, then Folex, then an enzyme for anything that came from food, a person or an animal. For leather, use a leather cleaner and a soft brush, work in sections about the size of a hand, wipe with a damp towel and finish with a dry one. Seams and perforations hold the most dirt, so brush along them. Always test a new product on a hidden spot such as the side of the seat base first.

What not to use on a car interior

  • Magic erasers. They are fine abrasives. On plastic they leave a dull patch that cannot be fixed, and on leather they wear through the coating.
  • Alcohol and ammonia on screens. They can damage anti-glare coatings. Several automakers say so in the owner’s manual.
  • Undiluted APC or degreaser. Strong mixes leave white haze on dark plastic and dry out leather.
  • Shiny dressings on the dash, wheel or pedals. They cause windshield glare and make grips slippery.
  • Household disinfecting wipes on leather. Most contain alcohol or quats that dry the finish over time.
  • Too much water. Soaked seats and carpet take days to dry and can grow mildew. On a headliner, water loosens the glue and the fabric sags.

Best car interior cleaner according to Reddit

I read through 45 of the most active car interior cleaner threads on Reddit, nearly all in r/AutoDetailing, to see what people who clean cars every day actually buy. P&S Xpress is the clear favorite and came up in about three of every four threads. Koch Chemie, Griot’s Garage, Adam’s and Meguiar’s were the next most named. The advice that repeats most is to dilute: people mix APCs at 1:10 to 1:20 for interiors and even use Xpress cut with water in a foaming sprayer. The other recurring points line up with what I found: spray a brush or towel rather than the surface, want a matte factory finish over shine, buff 303 dry, try a mild leather cleaner before a strong one and keep interior cleaners off touchscreens. The most common horror stories are a hazed nav screen, a headliner that sagged after a carpet cleaner or steam, and a glove box ruined by a magic eraser.

Buying car interior cleaner on Amazon

Amazon is the easiest place to find P&S, Koch Chemie and Lexol, which most auto parts stores don’t stock. A few things are worth checking before you order:

  • Who sells it. Look for “Ships from and sold by Amazon” or the brand’s own store. Third-party listings of liquids are more often old stock.
  • Concentrate or ready to use. Koch Chemie Green Star and other APCs are concentrates. Using them straight is wasteful and too strong for a car interior.
  • Size. A 16-ounce bottle is right for a first try. Detailers buy gallons of Xpress and Green Star; most owners never need that much.
  • Bundles. Kits often add a bottle you won’t use. Buy the cleaner you need and a separate pack of microfiber towels.

DIY car interior cleaner

A few drops of mild, dye-free dish soap in a spray bottle of warm water cleans hard plastic and light dirt on cloth well enough, and it costs almost nothing. Wipe it off with a damp towel so it does not leave a sticky film. Distilled water alone is the safest thing for a screen. White vinegar mixed with water works on glass and on salt stains in carpet but leaves a smell for a day and should not be used on leather. Do not mix homemade cleaners with bleach or ammonia. A purpose-made interior cleaner is still faster and safer on leather, but the DIY mix is fine for the plastics.

FAQ

What is the best car interior cleaner?

P&S Xpress Interior Cleaner is the best all-around choice. It is safe on plastic, vinyl, leather and fabric, cleans well and dries to a matte factory finish with no residue.

What do professional detailers use to clean car interiors?

Most use a dedicated interior cleaner such as P&S Xpress, a diluted all-purpose cleaner such as Koch Chemie Green Star for heavy grime, soft brushes, microfiber towels and a hot water extractor for carpet and cloth seats.

Can I use one cleaner on the whole interior?

A good interior cleaner handles plastic, vinyl, leather and light fabric cleaning. Glass needs its own cleaner, screens need only a damp microfiber, and set-in stains on carpet or cloth need a spot remover or an enzyme.

Is all-purpose cleaner safe on car leather?

Only when it is heavily diluted, and a leather cleaner is still the better choice. Strong APC mixes are alkaline and can dry out or strip the coating on leather seats.

What can I use to clean a car touchscreen?

A clean microfiber lightly dampened with distilled water or a quick detailer labeled safe for screens, such as Meguiar’s Ultimate Interior Detailer. Never spray the screen directly and never use alcohol or ammonia glass cleaner.

Is Armor All bad for a car interior?

Armor All’s original protectant leaves a glossy finish that causes windshield glare and attracts dust, which is why detailers avoid it. Their wipes are fine for a quick clean of plastic but should not be used on leather, screens or glass.

How do I get stains out of cloth car seats?

Vacuum first, then spray a fabric cleaner or spot remover, scrub with an upholstery brush and blot or extract the liquid. For food, milk, vomit or pet stains, use an enzyme cleaner and give it about ten minutes to work.

How often should I clean my car interior?

A quick wipe-down and vacuum every one to two weeks, and a full clean of seats, carpet and glass every three to four months. Clean spills right away; they are much easier before they set.

Do I need a leather conditioner?

Usually not on a newer car. Most modern leather is coated and absorbs little. Conditioner helps older, uncoated or dry leather.
