The best car trunk organizer for most people is the FORTEM 3-Compartment Trunk Organizer: it fits sedan trunks, holds 50 liters and has a lid, tie-down straps and a non-slip base. This guide covers 21 organizers in four groups: trunk organizers for sedans and SUVs, crates, cargo nets and hard cases, backseat organizers and under-seat storage for trucks. Every pick lists its size, load limit and price, and the fit checker below tells you which ones fit your trunk. Listings and prices were checked on 13 October 2026.

How we chose these organizers
Most trunk organizers sold online are the same 600D polyester bag under different brand names, so the picks here are chosen on the features that actually differ: what stiffens the walls, how the organizer grips the floor, whether it has straps or a lid, its listed load limit and its footprint. Each pick comes from a brand with a long sales record on Amazon, a complete listing and a clear role on this page. Sizes, load limits and prices are taken from the product listings and were checked on 13 October 2026. Prices change often, so treat them as a guide. Some links on this page are affiliate links; our affiliate disclosure explains how they work.
How to choose a car trunk organizer
Start with the size, then pick the type, then the features. An organizer that is 2 inches too long for your floor is useless however good its lid is.
Collapsible or rigid
Collapsible fabric organizers are the default: they cost $13 to $36, fold flat in seconds and hold 50 to 86 liters. Their weak point is the walls. Cheap models stiffen them with cardboard, which goes soft when something spills. Board panels are better, and corrugated plastic (the Gorilla Grip) is the most water resistant. Rigid plastic crates and cases never sag and hose clean, but they have no pockets and take the same space empty or full, unless they fold like the CleverMade crate.
Heavy duty trunk organizers
Look for three things: a listed load limit of 60 lb or more, stiffeners that are not cardboard and 1680D fabric or hard plastic. The Gorilla Grip (60 lb, corrugated plastic panels), the Oasser hard-lid model (110 lb, density board, 1680D) and the Rubbermaid ActionPacker (135 lb, hard plastic) meet that bar. Check the load limit before you buy: the K KNODEL Small lists only 10 lb.
Trunk organizers with a lid
A lid hides the contents from anyone looking through the rear glass of an SUV or hatchback, keeps dust off an emergency kit and gives a flat top for a coat. Soft fold-over lids, like the FORTEM’s, are fine for privacy. A board-stiffened lid, like the Oasser’s, stays flat and takes light items on top.
Trunk organizers with a cooler
Cooler organizers add an insulated, leakproof bag next to the dry compartments. They keep groceries cold on the way home and drinks cold for a day trip, provided you use ice packs instead of loose ice. Most are 36 inches or longer, so they suit SUVs and minivans more than sedans.
Grip and straps
An organizer that slides into the tailgate under braking spills its contents. Hook-and-loop strips grip trunk carpet well and grip rubber mats and plastic liners not at all. Straps that hook to the cargo anchor points work on any surface. If your trunk has a rubber liner, buy an organizer with straps or put non-slip shelf liner underneath.
How to measure your trunk for an organizer
The width between the wheel wells is the measurement most people miss: it is narrower than the trunk opening and narrower than the floor behind the wells.

Four measurements tell you which organizer fits: floor width between the wheel wells, floor depth, opening height and, in an SUV, the height under the cargo cover.
- Time
- 10 minutes
- You will need
- Tape measure, Pen and paper or a phone
Empty the trunk floor
Take everything out, including any loose floor mat that lifts, so the tape lies flat on the surface the organizer will sit on.
Measure the width between the wheel wells
Run the tape straight across the floor at the narrowest point, which is between the two wheel-well bulges. This is the number that limits an organizer's length when it sits across the trunk.
Measure the floor depth
Measure from the back of the rear seats to the inside of the trunk lip or tailgate seal. In a sedan, also measure the depth under the rear parcel shelf, which is often shorter than the floor.
Measure the opening height
In a sedan, measure the height of the trunk opening from the lip to the top of the opening. In an SUV, measure from the floor to the underside of the cargo cover if you keep it in place.
Subtract the clearance and compare
Take 1 inch off the width and 1 inch off the depth for straps, seat movement and hands. Compare the result with each organizer's listed length and width, or enter your numbers in the fit checker below.
Trunk organizer fit checker
Will it fit your trunk?
Measure the trunk floor, then enter it below. An organizer counts as a fit when its footprint plus 1 in of clearance on the width and the depth is within your floor.
Enter your trunk floor width and depth to see which organizers fit. Without JavaScript, compare your measurements with the footprints below.

Best overall
FORTEM 3-Compartment Trunk Organizer
Best for: Most cars: a compact footprint, a lid and tie-down straps
At 20.5 by 14.5 inches, the FORTEM fits across almost any trunk floor and still holds 50 liters in three sections. Stiff base plates back every side panel, so the walls stand up when the bins are half empty. It also has the three features most cheap organizers skip: a fold-over lid, two adjustable straps that hook to the trunk's anchor points and non-slip strips underneath. FORTEM lists a maximum load of 80 lb. The same listing sells a 2-compartment version and a 6-compartment version with a cooler.

Best heavy duty
Gorilla Grip Heavy Duty Trunk Organizer

Best for: A firm lid that keeps a flat top
Oasser's hard-lid model uses density board in the lid, side plates and base and is wrapped in 1680D Oxford fabric, the heaviest weave here. Best trunk organizers for SUVs and minivans
The cargo floor of a 3-row SUV or minivan is much wider than a sedan trunk, and a 23-inch organizer leaves a lot of empty floor for it to slide around on. These three use the extra room: two 36 to 37 inch organizers and one that hangs from the seat backs.

Best for large SUVs and minivans
Starling's Large Trunk Organizer (37 in)
Best for: Wide cargo floors: 3-row SUVs, minivans, wagons
At 37 inches long, the Starling's spans most of a large SUV or minivan floor. It is made of 1680D polyester over a 3-ply waterproof bottom, with removable dividers, a non-slip base and hooks to anchor it. The 19-gallon capacity is about 72 liters. It is too long for many sedan trunks, so measure first.

Best hanging organizer
SURDOCA Hanging Trunk Organizer
Best for: SUVs where the cargo floor must stay clear
The SURDOCA hangs on the back of the rear seats from the headrest posts and leaves the cargo floor free for luggage, strollers and dogs. It has eight pockets in 600D Oxford fabric and four non-slip strips on the back to stop it swinging. Crates, cargo nets and hard cases
Reddit recommends plastic totes, crates and cargo nets more often than any branded organizer. They cost less, never sag and wipe clean. A hard case is the answer for a truck bed or a camping load that has to stay dry.

CleverMade Collapsible Crate (25 L)
Best for: Grocery runs: the crate Reddit tells you to buy
Reddit's most common trunk advice is a crate, not an organizer. The CleverMade is a 25-liter polypropylene crate rated to 50 lb that folds flat in one push and stacks three high. Two side by side cover most trunk floors. It has no pockets or dividers, but it rinses clean and never sags.

Amiss Stretch Trunk Cargo Net
Best for: Holding loose items against the trunk wall for under $10

The Amiss is an envelope-style stretch net, 35.4 by 15.8 inches, with four hooks that clip to the cargo anchor points or tie-down loops on the trunk sides. It holds a gallon jug, a ball or a grocery bag upright against the trunk wall and costs about $10. It does not organize small items; pair it with a crate or organizer.

Rubbermaid ActionPacker (48 gal)
Best for: Truck beds, overlanding and gear that has to stay dry

Best car backseat organizers
A backseat organizer straps to the back of a front seat and puts bottles, snacks, wipes and a tablet within reach of the back seat. Most double as kick mats. Before you buy, check that your front headrests have exposed posts for the top strap, and that the organizer does not hang so low that it gets in the way of a rear-facing car seat.

Helteko Backseat Organizer (2-pack)

Helteko sells its backseat organizer as a two-pack, one per front seat. Best organizers for a truck’s back seat
In a crew-cab pickup the best storage is the empty space under the rear seat. Molded boxes are made for one truck family and fit it exactly; soft bags fit many trucks and fold away. Check your cab type and model year against the listing: a SuperCrew box does not fit a SuperCab.

Buying a trunk organizer on Amazon
Search Amazon for a car trunk organizer and most of the first page is the same product: a 21 to 23 inch, 2 to 3 compartment bag in 600D polyester, sold under a dozen brand names. The listings differ in ways the photos do not show, so read three things before you buy.
- The size in the description, not the title. Titles and spec tables often disagree, and some spec tables list the size of the folded bag or of one pocket. When they conflict, trust the size in the product description and measure your trunk.
- The load limit and its unit. Limits are given in pounds or kilograms and range from 10 lb to 135 lb among the picks here.
- What stiffens the walls. Cardboard, board and corrugated plastic panels all look the same in a photo. The listing says which one you get.
Ratings are also shared between variants: a 2-compartment, 3-compartment and cooler model often sit under one listing and one pool of reviews, so the rating may describe a different size from the one you are buying.
What Reddit recommends for trunk organization
We read 109 Reddit threads from 2013 to October 2026 in which people asked how to organize a trunk or back seat and others answered. The most common answer is not a trunk organizer at all: a latching plastic tote, a collapsible crate or a milk crate, held in place by a cargo net, bungee cords or a non-slip liner. Among branded organizers, FORTEM and Drive Auto come up most often, and the most frequent complaint is that soft organizers slide and sag once loaded. The table counts the threads that mention each product or method; the tips below it are the advice repeated most often.

What Reddit recommends
Rows are ranked by how many of 109 Reddit threads (collected 2026-10-13) named the product. Paraphrased, no usernames.
- 1Plastic storage tub or tote (Costco, Sterilite, Rubbermaid, HDX)Not in our picksTrunk28 threads
The most common answer after "milk crate": a latching tote from a big-box store. Cheap and strong, it contains leaks, and a tub can be strapped or screwed down. Measure the opening, because lids and tapered walls cost height.
- 2Collapsible crate (Costco InstaCrate and similar)Not in our picksTrunk24 threads
Folding crates, mostly the Costco InstaCrate and lookalikes, are the favorite for groceries: they fold flat, stack, and keep bags upright.
- 3Plastic milk crateNot in our picksTrunk23 threads
The default free answer. Square, nearly indestructible and easy to lift out; owners bungee it down or zip-tie two or three together for groceries.
- 4Cargo netNot in our picksTrunk19 threads
Nets that hook to the cargo anchors keep loose bags against the floor or wall. Model-specific envelope and floor nets work best; the stock net is called thin.
- 5Shelf liner, velcro, rubber mat or blanket under the organizerNot in our picksTrunk18 threads
Almost every "it slides" thread ends here: shelf liner, a rubber mat, a blanket or velcro strips under the organizer. Velcro grips carpet only.
- 6Dealer or OEM cargo organizerNot in our picksTrunk16 threads
Dealer cargo organizers (Subaru, Mazda, Honda, Toyota) fit well and strap to the anchors, but owners say they cost several times what a third-party one does.
- 7Free cardboard box (Costco)Not in our picksTrunk14 threads
Free Costco or produce boxes are the delivery driver answer; they hold paper bags upright but go soggy in wet weather.
- 8Bungee cordsNot in our picksTrunk10 threads
Bungee cords or straps to the tie-down loops keep a crate or tote from moving; the most repeated fix for sliding.

- 9Cargo blocks (WeatherTech CargoTech, VW CarGo and copies)Not in our picksTrunk10 threads
WeatherTech CargoTech, VW CarGo blocks and cheap copies pin round or odd loads, and move out of the way easily.
- 10Reusable and insulated grocery bagsNot in our picksTrunk8 threads
Large insulated or reusable bags (Costco, Ozark Trail, 31 Bags) hold a grocery run upright and double as store totes.
- 11MOLLE seat-back panelNot in our picksBackseat7 threads
MOLLE seat-back panels and pouches are the VEDC answer for a back seat; pick one with a middle strap so it does not sag into legroom.
- 12Pelican caseNot in our picksTrunk7 threads
Pelican cases never move and keep contents dry, but the price is the objection; most people settle for a latching tote instead.
The FORTEM organizer comes up as the Amazon name to buy: more rigid than cheap copies. One owner says it is far from buy-it-for-life.
The Rubbermaid ActionPacker is the "just buy a tote" pick: rugged, lid comes off, and it can be bungeed to a seat loop.
- 15DIY plywood or lumber organizerNot in our picksTrunk6 threads
Plywood floors with 2x4 dividers, cut to the trunk, are the VEDC answer when store organizers have too few compartments.
- 16Rola M.O.V.E. rigid-base organizerNot in our picksTrunk6 threads
Rola M.O.V.E. is the name people give when they want a rigid-base organizer: movable dividers, rubber base, folds down. It was about $60 even in 2014 threads.
Drive Auto is named as a reasonably priced collapsible organizer that stays put with or without its straps. It takes about half the trunk.

- Look for a rigid base and wall panels, because a soft organizer sags and collapses once loaded 9 threads
- Decide what goes in it first (groceries, emergency kit, tools), then pick the compartment layout 9 threads
- Measure the floor between the wheel wells and the opening height before buying; the lid and divider heights are what stop a fit 7 threads
- Keep fluids, cleaning products and anything that can leak in a latching plastic tote rather than a fabric organizer 6 threads

Car trunk organizer FAQ
What is the best car trunk organizer?
The FORTEM 3-Compartment Trunk Organizer is the best for most cars. It is small enough for a sedan trunk at 20.5 by 14.5 inches, holds 50 liters, and has a lid, tie-down straps and a non-slip base, with an 80 lb listed load limit. For a bigger cargo floor, the 37-inch Starling's organizer is the better fit.
What size trunk organizer do I need?
Measure the trunk floor between the wheel wells and from the seat backs to the trunk lip, then take 1 inch off each. The organizer's length and width must fit inside those numbers, either across the trunk or front to back. Organizers around 20 to 24 inches long suit most sedans and compact SUVs; 36 to 38 inch organizers need a midsize or 3-row SUV, a minivan or a wagon.
What is the best trunk organizer for an SUV?
For a compact SUV, the TrunkCratePro (23.6 by 14.6 inches, four compartments) or the Gorilla Grip (24 by 15 inches, corrugated plastic panels) use the floor well. For a 3-row SUV or minivan, the 37-inch Starling's covers most of the cargo width. If the floor must stay clear, hang the SURDOCA organizer from the rear seat headrests instead.
What is the best trunk organizer for a sedan?
Pick a short organizer. The K KNODEL Small (19.7 by 12.2 inches) and the FORTEM (20.5 by 14.5 inches) fit nearly every sedan trunk. Also check the opening height, since a sedan trunk lid opening is lower than the floor-to-roof height of an SUV.
What is the best heavy duty trunk organizer?
The Gorilla Grip Heavy Duty Trunk Organizer: its walls are corrugated plastic instead of cardboard, it is rated to 60 lb and it has non-skid feet, hook-and-loop strips and straps. For a hard case, the Rubbermaid ActionPacker is rated to 135 lb and takes a padlock, but it only fits SUVs and trucks.
Are trunk organizers worth it?
Yes, if you carry groceries, an emergency kit or sports gear and things roll around when you brake. A $15 to $35 organizer keeps bags upright and gives small items a fixed place. If you only carry the occasional grocery run, a collapsible crate does the same job for less.
What trunk organizer does Reddit recommend?
In 109 Reddit threads about organizing a trunk, the most common recommendations are a latching plastic tote (28 threads), a collapsible crate (24) and a milk crate (23), usually held down with a cargo net, bungee cords or shelf liner. FORTEM and Drive Auto are the trunk organizer brands named most often. The most common complaint about fabric organizers is that they slide and sag when loaded.
How do I keep a trunk organizer from sliding?
Use the tie-down straps if it has them and hook them to the cargo anchor points. Hook-and-loop strips grip carpet but not rubber mats or plastic liners. On a rubber or plastic surface, lay a piece of non-slip shelf liner under the organizer.
Do trunk organizers work on rubber trunk mats and cargo liners?
Hook-and-loop strips do not grip rubber or plastic, so an organizer on a WeatherTech-style liner relies on its weight, its straps or rubber feet. Choose one with straps, such as the FORTEM, Gorilla Grip or TrunkCratePro, or put non-slip shelf liner underneath.
Is a trunk organizer with a lid worth it?
A lid hides the contents from people looking in through the rear glass of an SUV or hatchback, keeps dust off an emergency kit and gives a flat top for a jacket or light bag. The K KNODEL with Lid and the Oasser hard-lid model are the lidded picks here; the FORTEM has a fold-over cover.
Can I put ice in a trunk organizer cooler?
Use ice packs. Organizer coolers are insulated, leakproof bags, not hard coolers, and loose ice melts into water that can find a seam. Ice packs keep drinks and groceries cold for a drive home or a day trip.
What is the best backseat organizer for kids?
The Helteko two-pack: each panel protects a seat back from kicks and has nine compartments, including bottle pockets and a touch-screen tablet holder. For one seat on a small budget, the SURDOCA backseat organizer costs about $9 and holds tablets up to 11 inches.
Will a backseat organizer fit my car?
Most backseat organizers strap around the front seat's headrest posts and around the bottom of the seat back. Check that your headrests have exposed posts: some cars have integrated headrests with no gap, and the top strap then has nothing to loop around.
What is the best organizer for a truck's back seat?
For a crew cab, use the space under the rear seat. OEDRO's molded box fits 2015 to 2026 F-150 SuperCrew and Super Duty Crew Cab trucks, Rough Country's fits 2019 to 2022 Silverado and Sierra crew cabs, and the soft GEEDAR bag fits most full-size crew cabs. For the seat back itself, the Carhartt organizer adds eight pockets and MOLLE webbing.
Are Amazon trunk organizers all the same?
Many are. Dozens of brands sell the same 21 to 23 inch, 2 to 3 compartment bag in 600D polyester with near-identical specs. The differences that matter are the wall stiffeners (cardboard, board or plastic), the base grip, straps, a lid and the listed load limit, which is why this guide lists them for every pick.
600D or 1680D: which fabric is better for a trunk organizer?
The number is the yarn weight in denier. 1680D fabric is heavier and more abrasion resistant than 600D, so it holds up better to tools and sports gear. 600D is fine for groceries. The Starling's, Oasser hard-lid and K KNODEL cooler organizers use 1680D.
How do I clean a trunk organizer?
Empty it, shake or vacuum out the crumbs and wipe the fabric with a damp cloth and mild soap. Take out removable stiffener boards before you wet the fabric, then let it dry open. Plastic crates and the ActionPacker can be hosed off.
